National Child Measurement Programme

For Action

The NHS needs to have a good understanding of how children are growing across the country, so that the best possible health services can be provided for children. As a result, in 2006, children in England in Reception and Year 6 had their height and weight measured. This programme is being repeated again this school year and your co-operation in helping us to run this again would be much appreciated.

Please find two letters in the enclosures section of this week's School Circular. The letter to headteachers provides detailed information about the programme. The letter to parents and carers is for your information only - please do not print these. Barnet PCT will be providing hard copies for distribution in next week's School Bag. In order to meet Barnet PCT deadlines, please distribute the letters to parents and carers as soon as you receive the hardcopies. The intention is to start the National Child Measurement Programme the week commencing 7 May 2007.

School Funding 2008-2011

For Action - Response required by 16 May

Free conference for Heads, Bursars and Governors  - 24 May 9:00 to 12:30

The 2007/08 financial year may be only just beginning, but the government is now drawing up plans for school funding in the next three year spending cycle 2008 to 2011. Our third half - day conference on 24 May 2007 will examine the issues in the DfES consultation and how they affect Barnet schools. Barnet Children's Service will also be looking forward to its own review of the school funding formula and gathering views from schools.

The conference is free and of interest to everyone concerned with any aspect of finance in schools - previous events have been very well received. There will be a keynote presentation followed by small group briefings, which are lead by experts in their field. This is an excellent opportunity to both learn and exchange views. It is hoped that delegates will also be able to take advantage of the chance to meet colleagues from other schools.

The keynote presentation is entitled "School, Early Years and 14-16 Funding 2008-11 - the DfES Consultation" and there are 4 briefings covering different aspects of the consultation including 14-19, SEN and Early Years.

The invitation is in the enclosures section and can also be downloaded from our website www.funding.barnet.lgfl.net.  Please complete and return it by 16 May.

It is with great sadness that we must tell you of the death of Anne Jarvis on the 19 April. Many of you will have known and worked with Anne who was a major figure in education in Barnet over a 30 year period. She was a teacher at Northside, a Councillor and Chair of the Education Committee.

Her funeral service will take place at East Barnet Baptist Church (Crescent Road, East Barnet) on Monday 30 April at 12.00 noon followed by burial at The Green Burial Ground, Olney, Bucks. The family is requesting that flowers are not sent, but that donations be forwarded to the North London Hospice, 47 Woodside Avenue, London N12 8TF. It is hoped to arrange a memorial event to celebrate the life of Anne in the summer.
