Commemorating Holocaust Day

For Action - Response required by 10 October

Children of the Holocaust Memorial Project : Snowdrops of Remembrance

Please see the letter from the Mayor in the enlosures section of this week's School Circular. As you are aware, Barnet Council is committed to commemorating the Holocaust Memorial Day which is highlighted by an annual public service held in Hendon Park.

The Mayor is inviting two pupils from every school in the borough, accompanied by a teacher or guardian, to take part in planting 10,000 snowdrops at Sunny Hill Park Hendon, on Monday 6 November 2006. Planting will start at 2.30pm and park staff will be on hand to help. It is our wish to include all the schools in the borough in this unique and spectacular event.

Please contact Jane Bamber, Events Officer, on 020 8359 2493, or email her on jane.bamber@barnet.gov.uk by Friday 20 October to let her know the names of the two pupils and their guardian who will represent your school at this event.

Updated Ethnicity and New First Language Data Collection Guidance

For Information
Urgent - to  prepare in advance of PLASC/ASC

Following last week's Circular, there have been a number of enquiries about the updated guidance. We hope the information below will answer queries for all schools.

The updated guidance on pupil data collection for Ethnicity and the new guidance for First Language data collection is needed in preparation for the census next term.

From January 2007, for the first time, PLASC/ASC will formalise the collection of pupils' first languages and enable a comprehensive picture to be established of the languages spoken, both across schools and nationally. The guidance will help schools to prepare for this requirement.

Please contact David Tobin (020 8359 7274) for further information about information management systems and Jeanette Redding, Inspector for Inclusion and Equalities (020 8359 6326) for further information on language and ethnicity matters.

For ease we have enclosed the guidance again this week.

Deputy Chief Education Officer

Individuals Within Communities: Black History in Barnet before 1965

This small exhibition - a contribution to Black History Month 2006 - documents the presence of Black and Asian people in the area now covered by London Borough of Barnet from the 1760s to the 1960s.

Individuals within Communities, which has been prepared by Barnet's Heritage Officer using material from the borough's Archives, reveals 'people of colour' in a wide variety of roles, from servant to clergyman, circus hand to historian, in the period before mass immigration.

The exhibition is relevant to History KS2 & KS3.

Admission is free. Please ring 0208 203 0130 for details of opening times and advice on school visits.
