Children and Young People Plan 2008/09 - 2010/11

For Information

The 2008/9 - 2010/11 Barnet Children and Young People Plan has now been published. Two hard copies are enclosed in the school bag, for the attention of the headteacher and the chair of governors. An electronic version of the plan can also be accessed on BGfL.

The plan provides the framework for all work with children and young people in Barnet, setting out our priorities to improve outcomes and detailing what the local authority, schools, the primary care trust and other partners will be doing to meet these priorities.

As mentioned at previous Director's meetings and meetings with Chairs of Governors, all schools must have regard to the Children and Young People Plan in their own school planning.

Let's Get Cooking

For Action

Let's Get Cooking is a 5 year, £20 million programme, supported by the Big Lottery Fund, to set up a network of 5,000 cooking clubs across England. Let's Get Cooking will contact schools in early June to invite them to apply. Eleven schools in Barnet will receive funding and training for trainers as well as resources. Priority will be given to schools with a free school meal entitlement of 20% or more.

When you have received the invitation to apply, applications for funding should be made on 24 June for priority schools and on 26 June for other schools. Applications are to be made via the website by completing a brief form and inputting the code provided on the invitation. Allocation of places will be done on a first come first served basis as there is a limited amount of funding. An introductory event for successful applicants will take place at North London Business Park on 15 October at 1.30pm.

Children's Service Job Shadowing Programme

For Action

Barnet's Children's Workforce Shadowing Programme was launched on 7 May as an added learning and development opportunity for staff in the children's workforce. The programme aims to improve the ability of the children's workforce in Barnet to work together by fostering good working relationships across the partnership and raising awareness of the range of work being undertaken. It is open to everyone working within the children's workforce across the partnership in Barnet.

Job shadowing opportunities are therefore available within the Local Authority and across the other agencies and services, including health (PCT, Acute Trust, CAMHS), voluntary and private sector, Middlesex University, Barnet College and schools.

Interested participants should discuss with their manager and then submit a completed application form, included in the enclosures section of this week's School Circular, to the Children's Workforce Development Team at the North London Business Park. The team will check that that the arrangement meets the agreed criteria for the scheme, arrange a suitable placement and link up the participants with a named contact in their chosen area of work.

The Children's Workforce Development Team has had a very positive response from various sectors across the partnership willing to have other members of the children's workforce shadowing them. If you and/or your team are available for others to shadow you, please contact the Children's Workforce Development Team at childrens.workforce@barnet.gov.uk and we'll link you up with participants who are interested in shadowing someone in a school.
