Children's Social Care Consultation Line

For Information

At the summer term meetings with headteachers, we discussed setting up a telephone helpline for advice on social care referral routes and thresholds. This dedicated consultation line will enable anyone working with children to ring and discuss their concerns with an experienced, senior social worker.

The consultation line is available twice a week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 9.30 -11.30 on 020 8359 4336. Demand for the service will be reviewed with the potential to expand if it proves useful. A flyer is enclosed which you can circulate and display.

NB. This service is for advice not referrals. If you have immediate concerns about a child you must contact the Referral & Assessment duty team in the usual way with a completed inter-agency referral form via email to dutyfrontdesk@barnet.gov.uk by telephone on 020 8359 4066 or fax to 020 8455 8032.

Do please send comments or requests for clarification to emma.baatz@barnet.gov.uk or ring 020 8359 4064

Private Fostering Workshop

For Information

Do you know a child who is living with someone who is not their parent?

Private Fostering Workshop:
Thursday 4 October 2007, 9:30am - 12:30pm
Health-Education Room, Ground Floor
Vale Drive Clinic
Vale Drive
Barnet, Herts
EN5 2ED

This event is part of an ongoing programme of awareness raising events. It is essential that all practitioners working with children are aware of their own responsibilities in relation to Private Fostering.

Private fostering is an arrangement that is made between the parent and the person caring for the child. It is not fostering where the local authority arranges for an approved foster carer to look after a child "in care".

All members of the children's workforce have a duty to safeguard the welfare of all children in the borough. This includes privately fostered children. In order to fulfil this duty, all practitioners working with children must notify us if they believe a child they are in contact with is in a private fostering arrangement. We will then assess the arrangement and enter it onto the Private Fostering Register.

Private fostering is therefore the concern of every member of the children's workforce and we would like to encourage as many of you as possible to attend the event and learn more about it.

Please fill out the booking form within the enclosures section of this week's School Circular and email to debbie.gabriel@barnet.gov.uk

Police Junior Citizenship Scheme 2008

For Action - Response required by 21 September 2007

For the attention of Year 6 teachers

Due to the ever increasing demand from schools for this popular educational event, Barnet Borough Police and partners propose to run the above scheme for 4 weeks in 2008 from Monday 2nd June through to Friday 27th June 08.

The event will again be held at Avenue House, East End Road, N3 and is for Year 6 pupils only.

Barnet Police Schools office therefore urgently requires a level of interest from Year 6 teachers, so we can gauge how many weeks are needed. Please e-mail yvonne.wood@met.pnn.police.uk by Friday 21 Sept 2007 to register your interest.

Once the interest level has been gauged letters will be forwarded to schools for them to supply this office with their suitable dates.

Junior Citizen Co-ordinator
