| Action - Primary Schools: Secondary Transfer - September 2007 | ![]() |
For all Primary Schools For Immediate Action - We would ask you to ensure that all Year 6 pupils receive a copy of the enclosed letter. A letter is enclosed in this week's School Circular regarding applications to Hertfordshire schools in 2007. This is because Hertfordshire County Council has been directed by the Secretary of State for Education and Skills to change admission rule 3, the sibling rule, for the current secondary transfer process for community and voluntary controlled secondary schools. The new rule extends the criteria relating to siblings to include pupils in Year 12 and Year 13 at the time of admission. Previously this rule applied only to siblings in Year 7 to Year 11. As this may affect the preferences made by a parent in their original application all Year 6 pupils should be given this information. | Consent for School Dental Inspections | ![]() |
For Information As a result of a ruling by the Department of Health on the issue of consent for school screenings and dental surveys, all Primary Care Trusts (PCT) have suspended their regular school screening programme. It has been decided that positive informed consent must be obtained from parents of children under 10, and from children of 10 years and above if they are competent to give consent. The Department of Health is in discussion with DfES to find a solution to this problem. It is hoped that positive informed consent could be obtained from parents as part of the school entry process. The PCT intend to resume this process at the earliest opportunity. John Teasdale |

For Information
Barnet Primary Care Trust's collection of health promotion resources are now held at the Library and Resource Centre at Edgware Community Hospital and are available to borrow for use in schools.
Unusually for an NHS hospital library, this one is open for the public and professionals of Barnet to become members and use the journal and book collection and have access to the Internet. In addition, the Health Promotion Collection contains many resources for use with children and young people in schools, including videos, teaching packs, leaflets and models. The collection of 'teaching pack' folders containing lesson plans, exercises etc. covers many heath areas, and is especially strong in sexual health, smoking and drug education. There is also a range of materials on healthy eating, general works like Health for Life (ages 4-7 and 8-11), and a collection of books and resources around 'Philosophy for Children' and using stories for emotional development in young children.
Books and packs can be borrowed for 28 days, and videos for 14 days. To join the library, just drop by with appropriate ID. We are open 9:00 - 5:00 Monday - Friday (9.00 - 6:00 on Thursday) on the 1st floor of the Edgware Community Hospital, Burnt Oak Broadway, HA8 OAD
The Collection also includes health promotion leaflets and posters; limited amounts may be available to order. For a list of teaching resources available to borrow, or a catalogue of leaflets and posters please contact the library at library@barnet-pct.nhs.uk, or call 020 8732 6988 and ask for Pat Murphy.
