Monday 2nd July to
Friday 6th July 2007

Week of Celebrations in Barnet Schools

Many thanks for the positive feedback at the recent Headteachers' meetings.  I thought it would be useful to summarise the position at it stands.

  • Suggested dates: Monday 2nd July to Friday 6th July, with a focus day of Wednesday 4th July
  • Focus to reflect a broad interpretation of creativity and achievement
  • Events will be in schools or across schools to link to events already planned:
    • Black History Month
    • Sports Day
    • SSCO Activities
    • Music Festivals
    • BHSS
    • ICT
    • Dance Festivals
    • Science Year
    • Art Day
    • Presentation evenings
    • Concerts
    • International Food Day
    • International Focus
    • Modern Foreign Languages
    • School Journeys
  • Suggestions for whole Borough dimensions include:
    • Video Conferencing across a number of schools - student led project
    • Competition: Barnet pupils writing a song for all schools
    • Photographic record of 'A Day in the Life of our School', possibly leading to an exhibition
    • A letter to all pupils / staff

These suggestions are being worked up into more detailed proposals.

At this stage I need to know whether there are problems with the suggested dates or difficulties with the suggested activities, and whether we have missed out any major ideas. Please can you email Jane Elliott (jane.elliott@barnet.gov.uk) with any comments or suggests about this proposed event.

Many thanks

Meeting the Needs of Pupils from Minority Ethnic Groups, Refugees and Travellers

For Information - Translation Disk

A translation disk has now been circulated to every school in the borough. The main focus of this was to gather translation resources from within the Borough and to provide signposting to many free resources readily available on the internet.

I hope you will find this a useful resource in promoting the Inclusive principles and practices which underpin much of the work in schools in Barnet. As colleagues will be well aware translation is not the solution to meeting the diverse needs of the language communities in our schools. Translation can aid in welcoming and supporting pupils and families into our school communities while reflecting our schools' commitment to valuing, respecting and celebrating language and cultural diversity.

Classroom strategies supportive of raising the achievement of bilingual pupils/students have previously been sent to all schools in Barnet as well as resources for Celebrating Black History Month. Both these resources can be found at the link below and it is anticipated that in the near future all translation material will be up-loaded to this page.

Invitation to BEARS Network Meeting

PROMOTING CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE'S LEGAL RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

For Action - Confirm Attendance by 26 March 2007

Schools are invited to attend the next meeting of the BEARS Network (Barnet Environmental Action for Real in Schools) at 4pm on Wednesday 28 March at Mill Hill County High School, Worcester Crescent, Mill Hill, NW7 4LL. The meeting should be finished by about 5.30pm.

The BEARS Network allows schools to share their experiences of carrying out environmental projects. All schools in Barnet are invited to join the Network, regardless of whether they have carried out an environmental project or not. Through the Network, schools can help each other to further improve their local environment.

Everyone who has attended these relatively informal meetings has found them useful for developing environmental projects within their school, as well as having an informal chat with supportive colleagues.

If you would like to attend the meeting, please confirm your attendance by Monday 26 March. For further information about the BEARS Network or to discuss environmental projects that your school could carry out, please contact Stuart Gadsden, Waste and Sustainability Officer on email stuart.gadsden@barnet.gov.uk or phone on 020 8359 7418
