For Information On Thursday the 14 June, Barnet Libraries and Barnet Schools Libraries Resources Service will be holding a special event to shadow the Carnegie Medal - the UK's premier children's book prize. The Carnegie Medal is awarded each year by a panel of Librarians to the most outstanding children's book of the year. Nominations are received from local authorities and members of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals during October and a final shortlist is drawn up in May. The shortlist for this year's medal features 6 outstanding novels from some of the best contemporary children's writers. Seven Barnet secondary schools will be participating in the event, with a total of around 80 young people scheduled to participate. The schools involved are:
Each school will send a delegation of students who, having read the shortlisted titles, will discuss each book to determine who they believe should be awarded the 2007 Carnegie Medal. The event will enable participating young people to develop essential critical reading skills as well as an ability to practise skills in persuasion and public speaking. The afternoon will begin with a short talk from author Brian Keaney, who was shortlisted for the 2006 Carnegie Medal. Following group discussions of the nominated books, the young people will vote for their favourite title to determine the Barnet Carnegie winner. The national winner will be announced at a ceremony in central London the following week on the 21 June. The event will take place in the Emerald Suite, North London Business Park from 1.30 - 4pm. For Information Congratulations to the following schools and educational settings: Discovery Bay PRU has been awarded National Healthy Schools Status. Our Lady of Lourdes School is the second Barnet school to be awarded the STAR award (Sustainable Travel Accredited and Recognised) - sustainable level. For information about how to apply for a STAR award, please contact Alison Sharpe (School Travel Plan Coordinator) on 020 8359 7603 or alison.sharpe@barnet.gov.uk or go to www.staccreditation.org.uk A Barnet primary school has become the first in the country to receive an award for having a secure but welcoming environment. Church Hill Primary School, in East Barnet, received the award after taking part in the scheme last July. Governors at the school wanted to improve security after a few minor burglaries, but avoid the usual response of installing high fences and barriers to entry. They wanted to make security a part of the life of the school whilst maintaining an open and friendly ethos where children, parents and staff feel welcome. The initiative, Secured Environments, is a new risk management scheme launched earlier this year by the Association of Chief Police Officers Crime Prevention Initiatives and Perpetuity Group. It promotes good security practice in organisations by focusing on strategy, process and people. Headteacher, Rebecca Mottershead said, "Everyone at Church Hill Primary is extremely pleased about the award. The school's governors have been concerned about security and achieving this Secured Environments Award shows that we take the issue seriously. The process has helped us realise that security can be low key yet effective: building a fortress isn't always the best or most effective strategy." Cllr Fiona Bulmer, Barnet Council's Cabinet Member for Children's Service, said, "It is important that children, parents, staff and governors feel confident their school is a safe place to learn. Church Hill Primary School have demonstrated that this can be achieved in a sensitive but effective way." The ceremony, which is also the UK's first Secured Environments award ceremony will be held at 9am on 5 June at Church Hill Primary School. For more information about the Secured Environments award, please contact Dr Tim Pascoe on 0116 222 5555 or t.pascoe@perpetuitygroup.com or go to www.securedenvironments.com |
