Cabinet Responsibilities

For Information

Cllr Mike Freer, Leader of Barnet Council, has re-organised Cabinet responsibilities:

Cllr Fiona Bulmer is the Cabinet Member for Children's Services

Cllr John Marshall is the Cabinet Member for Investment in Learning.

These changes address the expectation that Local Authorities have a single, lead Member with responsibility for children's services while recognising the importance of major developments in Barnet, including the Primary School Capital Investment programme and the formulation of a strategy for library services.

Chief Education Officer

Joint Area Review (JAR)

For Information

Joint Area Review (JAR) of services for children and young people in Barnet

The report of the JAR has been published (finally). A hard copy is enclosed this week. The web link is: http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/reports/index.cfm?fuseaction=lea&id=302

The report recognises the rapid progress made by all services in Barnet over the last three years and confirms that they are now consistently good. It finds also that we recognise where we can improve further. You will see that there are several references in the report to the positive contribution which schools make to improving outcomes for children and young people. I believe firmly that one of the strengths of Barnet is that we are working together well to meet the needs of all the children in our community and this is woven through the report.

Many thanks to colleagues in the schools which took part directly in the JAR and thanks to all schools and services for the real difference we are making together for children and young people in Barnet.

Gillian Palmer
Chief Education Officer

Health and Safety Bulletins

For Information

Health and Safety Bulletins are the main method for the LA to communicate important health, safety and welfare information to schools. Sometimes, the advice is for the headteacher only, but it is often relevant to other staff within the school. If this is the case, we will make this clear within the bulletin; please ensure that the message is communicated and that records are kept of this communication (for example, by keeping a record of the staff meeting at which the matter is discussed).

The Environment Competition

For Action - Response required by 3 November

You are invited to enter this year's 'Environment Competition'. The competition is open to schools, youth groups, voluntary groups, community groups, residents' associations, faith groups and other groups of Barnet residents who wish to take part. To enter, you simply need to carry out a project that helps to improve your local environment and then submit a short report.

No matter how big or small your project, we want to hear from you. You may have entered before or this may be your first time but all entries are warmly received. In 2005, all the major prize-winners were Barnet schools.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of McDonald's Restaurants Ltd and an anonymous donor, there are great prizes for this year's competition including a 1st prize of £750 and further prizes of up to £1,000 at the judges' discretion.

An entry pack within the encosures section of this week's School Circular contains all the information you'll need to apply. Your registration form needs to be returned by 3 November 2006 and the project report returned by 23 February 2007. So start planning and carrying out your project now!
