| Mayor of the London Borough of Barnet - Charities Appeal 2011/2012 | ![]() |
For Information The Mayor of Barnet, Cllr Lisa Rutter, has chosen three charities for her Mayoral year which are Barnet Young Carers and Siblings (BYCAS), The Outward Bound Trust and Alzheimer's Society. BYCAS - to help children from the age of 5-17 years of age who look after their parents or siblings with illness, disability and dementia and have no other family members to help them and therefore have no respite. These children have no childhood and have nothing to look forward to in life. She would like to give those children a Wish List to make some of their dreams come true. The Outward Bound Trust - to help children and young people from the age of 11-24 years of age from poor disadvantaged backgrounds. She wants to give them a life changing experience by unlocking their potential, build their confidence and provide them the footing for a better future. Alzheimer's Society - to help the Society continue with their research to try and find the cause and prevent our next generation from developing dementia. Any support for these charities will be gratefully received. Donations/Cheques can be made payable to 'The Mayor of Barnet 2011-2012 Charity Appeal' and sent to Mayor's Office, Building 2, North London Business Park., Oakleigh Road South, London, N11 1NP. For further information, see the Mayor's website or contact mayor@barnet.gov.uk. Robert McCulloch-Graham |

| Event to launch the Early Intervention and Prevention Services and Family Focus | ![]() |
For Information As part of the One Barnet project to intervene early with families in order to prevent more complex problems developing at a later stage, Barnet Children's Service has developed Family Focus. The new Early Intervention and Prevention Services who make up Family Focus are holding an event to launch these teams on 14 October 2011 from 9am - 1pm at North London Business Park, please see this week's enclosures section for the agenda. The Family Focus Team has developed from the Parenting Support Service who has supported families in targeted schools for the past three years. The Intensive Family Focus team was previously known as the Family Intervention Programme (FIP) and is working with the top 100 most complex and vulnerable families in Barnet. The Common Assessment Framework (CAF) will form part of the joint referral process for Family Focus teams. As a result of consultation with practitioners across schools and other agencies the CAF form has been streamlined. This too will be introduced to participants attending the event alongside the work that Family Focus will provide in response to needs identified by the CAF. Heads teachers, deputies and inclusion staff are invited to attend and hear how they can access this support for the families in their school community. If you would like to attend please contact Ali Alavi on 020 8359 7933 or ali.alavi@barnet.gov.uk. Karin Ridout |

| Free cycle storage available | ![]() |
For Informatrion Schools who have been awarded STAR accreditation in 2010 and/or 2011 are eligible for free cycle storage via the Mayor's Cycle Initiative. The application date to apply for this has been extended into September and opened up to schools who have already received free cycle storage previously but now need additional space. Infant schools are now also included for the first time with the inclusion of appropriately sized cycle and/or scooter storage. Please see this week's enclosures section for documents detailing the types of storage available and how to apply. 86 schools across Barnet are eligible for free cycle storage but so far this financial year only seven have applied. Due to changes to planning regulations schools planning to apply for cycle storage will need to contact the council's planning department to see if planning permission is required. If planning permission is required this will have to be paid for by the school. They will need to know where you intend to locate your storage and the type of storage you are considering.
All completed applications should be sent to: Alison Sharpe |

| Gift Aid Guidance | ![]() |
For Information The following guidance has recently been issued by the DfE which school Governing Bodies and PTAs etc that have charitable status may find useful. School charities (that is schools run by charities, charities associated with schools and charitable groups that support schools - for example, a charitable Parent Teacher Association) often find Gift Aid is an effective way of boosting funding. While many donations made to school charities are eligible for Gift Aid it often goes unclaimed as school charities are unaware of what they can claim or feel Gift Aid is too complicated. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) have published 'Gift Aid & Payroll Giving: a reference guide for school charities' to help school charities make the most of Gift Aid and Payroll Giving. It provides a summary of how Gift Aid and Payroll Giving work and which donations qualify including simple examples relating to funds received by school charities. More information can be found on the HMRC website. Nick Adams |

For Information The DfE have recently drawn to our attention to guidance on photocopier leases. As this is a potential area for schools to get drawn into inappropriate contracts we are passing on this warning and will in due course be revising our own guidance in the Schools Financial Guide. Within the procurement section of the DfE website, they have recently issued a note on "tips for successful leasing" in relation to photocopiers and multi-functional devices at: Schools are also reminded that they may join the council's photocopier contract and should contact Simon Hime on 020 8359 2046 when in the process renewing Photocopier leases to ensure a full comparison of the options.
