Requests are invited for funding from the next SEN Contingency Panel. The panel will be meeting on Wednesday 19 October 2011 to distribute additional SEN funding to nursery, primary and secondary mainstream schools who feel they have a child with exceptional and unforeseen need which the school feels is not met by existing SEN funding streams. Funding will only be given for the current financial year (2011/12) and will not be given for a child whose level of need was known before the school's 2011/12 budget was agreed.

If you wish to apply please complete the application form, available from the SEN Contingency Fund page, and send it, together with brief supporting evidence (where appropriate), to Sarrosh Malik by:

Trees on School Sites

For Information

The London Borough of Barnet has co-ordinated tree inspections on all school sites it owns and controls mostly at it's own expense. The council keeps all of the records of the inspections electronically and has informed schools of the details of the surveys. It has also advised schools to action all outstanding works recommended by the inspections so that the sites remain safe and secure.

It is strongly recommended, to comply with Health and Safety obligations and to minimise the risk of potential accidents on site and reduce the risk of structural damage to schools and neighbouring buildings, that these inspections are undertaken every two years.

The last full programme of inspections was carried out in 2008 and is therefore past renewal. It is important that the schools do not let the frequency of the inspections lapse so we would urge schools to renew their inspections.

Greenspaces under the leadership of Andy Tipping - Principal Arboricultural Officer (tel: 020 8359 7838, email: andy.tipping@barnet.gov.uk) is prepared to co-ordinate the inspection programme again, keep, record and maintain inspection records and recommend  remedial works to be actioned at the schools cost.

The cost of the inspection is £375 per day (£165 per half day) and is carried out by a fully qualified and audited contractor as detailed in the Traded Services Booklet.

Would you please make contact with Andy Tipping as soon as is practicable in order to facilitate this service and instruct the contractor to arrange a visit.

Interim Assistant Director - Estates (Commercial Services)

16-18 ESOL Pathways to Vocational and Academic studies

For Information

Our specialised 16-18 ESOL team have pulled together a motivational programme of learning, focused on speaking / listening, reading and writing while embedding the core subjects of maths, IT and science as well as citizenship, and the humanities.

Students are entered for Edexcel ESOL for Schools, Functional Skills in IT / Mathematics and Foundation Learning BTEC modules to ensure every student, whether E1 or L2 is accredited for their learning, thus providing greater opportunity for real individual progress.

Our pathways and success rates are outstanding; the majority of learners go on to study in FE across all vocational areas, achieving places in university, apprenticeships and employment.

September enrolment sessions are widely advertised on our website: www.barnet.ac.uk.

Ann Jeffery' Retirement from Barnet Finance

For Information

As you will know Ann left the council at the end of last term and had a farewell 'do' which many colleagues from schools were able to attend on 21 July 2011.

Very many colleagues in schools sent their very good wishes for Ann's future and their appreciation of her support over the years.

Ann has written to asked me to pass on her appreciation to all her friends and colleagues from schools for the warm messages and contributions for her leaving. The present from school contributions was in the form of a cheque and Ann has used this to get an Ipad.

SMART Table Forum

For Information

SMART Table Forum are currently looking for teachers who use SMART tables in their teaching to share their experiences and inform the future of software and content for SMART tables.

SMARTTABLEFORUM has been set up to act as an online community of practice and provide space for hosting surveys, app reviews and discussions about SMART tables in teaching.

SMART Table Forum would really value the input of teaching staff using SMART tables as their contribution will help to advance educational technology in a way that is useful on the front line (in the classroom!). They want to give teachers a voice in the development of this and help them to connect with others, share experiences and build on SMART table use in the classroom through the network they hope to create.

They are also looking for teachers in the UK to have a chat with to give us a bit of insight into SMART tables within their teaching practice. For further information contact Jen Stewart at jen@interface3.com.
